Attacks on Ukraine’s healthcare system must be halted, according to UN organizations.

GENEVA, Switzerland โ€“ The World Health Organization (WHO) and two other UN bodies have urged for an end to all attacks on Ukraine’s healthcare system.

“Today, we urge for an immediate halt to any attacks on health care in Ukraine,” the WHO, UNICEF, and the UN Population Fund stated in a joint statement (UNFPA).

“The WHO’s Surveillance System for Attacks on Health Care has documented 31 attacks on health care in Ukraine since the start of the war,” the UN agencies said, adding that “these attacks have resulted in at least 12 deaths and 34 injuries, and have impacted access to and availability of essential health services.”

They claimed that health care facilities were damaged or destroyed on 24 occasions, while ambulances were damaged or destroyed on five.

Attacking the most vulnerable – babies, children, pregnant women, and those already afflicted with illness and disease, as well as health personnel risking their lives to rescue lives โ€“ is “an act of unimaginable cruelty,” they stated.

Despite appeals for healthcare safety, the WHO said it is verifying more cases of attacks.

“Attacks on health care and health workers have a direct impact on people’s capacity to receive important health services, particularly for women, children, and other vulnerable groups,” according to the statement.

Over 4,300 births have occurred in Ukraine since the start of the war, according to UN agencies, with 80,000 Ukrainian women expecting to give birth in the following three months.

The UN agencies have warned that oxygen and medical supplies, notably those for the management of pregnancy problems, are running critically low.

“The Ukrainian health-care system is clearly under duress, and its collapse would be disastrous. It is imperative that every effort be taken to avoid this “they stated

The UN agencies stated, “It is important that humanitarian actors have safe and unrestricted access to ALL civilians in need, wherever they may be.”
