MANILA – MGI Tech Co., Ltd. of Shenzhen, China is considering establishing container laboratories in the Philippines for coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) screening in order to boost the country’s testing capacity.

MGI said in a statement on Friday that this is part of the company’s Southeast Asian expansion strategy, which includes the establishment of container labs in Laos, Malaysia, the Philippines, Singapore, and Thailand.

MGI has already introduced this innovation into Laos through the establishment of the Champa Life Science Economy Alliance (LSEA) Laboratory in Champassak province.

The USD11 million project consists of a 12-meter-long shipping container equipped with an MGI automation system capable of processing 30,000 samples per day in a pool testing setup.

“The container lab was designed to be easily transported and quickly deployed in stadiums and sports fields, community and district hospitals, and health departments, as well as other appropriate locations in emergency situations requiring mass testing,” MGI said.

The container laboratory is equipped with two highly automated systems, the MGISP-960 and the MGISTP-7000. Additionally, these automation systems reduce the need for manpower and manual labor, as well as speed up the turnaround time for test results.

“Since the outbreak began, MGI has been instrumental in the fight against Covid-19 by enabling communities and governments to scale up testing capacity and efficiency while maintaining a safe working environment for frontline health workers,” MGI Asia Pacific general manager Dr. Roy Tan said.

MGI established its Covid-19 testing laboratory in the Philippines two months after the pandemic began, at the Jose B. Lingad Memorial Regional Hospital in San Fernando City, Pampanga.

The laboratory is capable of processing up to 10,000 samples per day.
