In the midst of the pandemic, the Panagbenga weekend attracts 45K visitors.

BAGUIO CITY, PHILIPPINES β€” Despite a global pandemic, the Baguio Flower Festival, or Panagbenga 2022, managed to draw 45,000 visitors on its final weekend, much to the delight of the local government.

The municipal government is pleased with the outcome of the Panagbenga 2022 or Baguio Flower Festival, which began on March 6 and lasted on March 27, boosting the city’s business climate.

Mayor Benjamin Magalong estimated that up to 22,000 tourists have visited every day since March 25 in a recorded conversation shared with the media by the Public Information Office on Tuesday. “We had approximately 40,000 to 45,000 people last weekend,” he remarked, “so talagang marami (We had about 40,000 to 45,000 visitors over the weekend).”

“Very favorable [ang] business climate,” the mayor continued, “particularly na andoon pa ang Session Road event natin (the Session Road event was still there).”

According to him, the majority of tourists came on March 26, causing traffic congestion in the city’s major thoroughfares.

To alleviate traffic congestion, the mayor stated they had to ask the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to remove barricades off roadways that were still considered under construction but could be used.

Despite the cancellation of major crowd-drawing events like grand street dancing and flower float parades, the mayor stated that the Panagbenga weekend arrivals demonstrated tourists’ enthusiasm to participate in the city’s annual festival.

With the end of the coronavirus disease pandemic of 2019 (Covid-19) insight, he believes the Panagbenga of 2023 will be even bigger.

The primary activities of the flower festival were all discontinued in 2020, with only a few lesser events that did not draw a large crowd being kept. The following year’s celebration was similarly straightforward.

This year’s festival, albeit less elaborate than pre-pandemic celebrations, became a popular tourist attraction, attracting thousands of visitors and providing a boost to the local economy, which had been severely impacted by the pandemic.
