TACLOBAN CITY, Philippines – During this election season, the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will streamline the application procedure for gun ban exemptions and the details of security personnel to protect those who are facing threats.

During a visit to Catbalogan City, Samar on Wednesday, Commissioner George Erwin Garcia stated that the permission will be completed shortly in Comelec regional offices.

“To obtain a gun prohibition exemption and security application, you do not need to visit our main office in Metro Manila.” We’ve been getting calls from people pleading for their application to be approved. During the signing of a peace covenant, Garcia said, “We need to hurry up the process so that we can get rid of the cumbersome administrative formalities.”

Specific rules, he said, will be discussed at this week’s Comelec en banc session.

Members of the judiciary, the prosecutorial service, Public Attorney’s Office lawyers, government officials performing sensitive jobs, and Comelec field personnel are among those who stand to gain from the streamlining.

In preparation for the May 9 national and local elections, the Comelec imposed a 150-day gun prohibition from January 9 to June 8.

According to Comelec Resolution No. 10728, the unauthorized carrying, carrying, or transportation of firearms and lethal weapons outside of houses, companies, and public places is prohibited during the period.

On December 1, 2021, applications for gun prohibition exemptions will be accepted.
