PRRD will inquire as to why the BIR failed to collect estate taxes.

MANILA, Philippines β€” President Rodrigo Duterte stated on Tuesday that he would ask the Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR) to explain why it failed to collect estate taxes, but he did not identify anyone.

Duterte was talking “e-sabong,” or online cockfighting, in a prerecorded Talk to the People when he switched to estate tax collection.

“Sa Malacanang, hindi naman kailangan ng reminder. (Malacanang does not require a reminder.) Nandiyan ‘yung BIR, so tanungin natin ‘yang BIR bakit hanggang ngayon hindi nakolekta ‘yung estate tax. “Since the BIR is here, let’s ask them why the estate tax hasn’t been collected),” he remarked.

Acting presidential spokesperson Martin Andanar said Duterte’s remark applies to everyone who has not paid their inheritance taxes during a press conference at the Palace on Wednesday.

“All the President did was remind the BIR to do its job, which is to collect taxes…

I’m not sure if it’s a matter of politics or personality. Dapat sa lahat ng’di nagbabayad ay habulin ng BIR sapagkat kailangan ng karagdangang pondo ang ating national government Because the government would require additional cash, the BIR should go after everyone who has failed to pay their taxes),” he said.

The right of a deceased individual to transmit his or her inheritance to his or her legitimate heirs and beneficiaries at the time of death is subject to estate tax.

Several parties had previously demanded that the BIR recover the Marcoses’ tax debt of PHP203.819 billion.

According to BIR Commissioner Caesar Dulay, the Marcos family would receive a written demand from the BIR in December 2021 to pay their estate taxes.

In a letter dated March 14, Dulay stated, “The BIR did make a written demand to the Marcos heirs over their tax liabilities on December 02, 2021.”

The presidential campaign of Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. stated that the lawsuit “remains ongoing in court.”

In the discussions concerning tax issues, Marcos himself stated that there is “a lot of fake news involved.”

The Presidential Commission on Good Government (PCGG) stated, however, that the BIR “had completed its final assessment” on the affected properties in 1993 and that “the verdict on the tax matter had become final and executory as early as 1997.”
