By June, a Duterte adviser advises that booster cards be required.
MANILA – Starting in June, Presidential Adviser for Entrepreneurship Joey Concepcion proposes requiring a card for booster shots to ensure that fully vaccinated Filipinos receive their third dosage of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccine.
Concepcion made the comment after the Department of Health discovered that Filipinos are not getting their booster shot against Covid-19 as often as they should.
According to government statistics, 11.8 million people out of over 65 million who completed their primary Covid-19 dosages had received their booster shot.
“I recognize it will take time for them to acquire the booster, but vaccines are now more widely available, individuals are free to travel around, and we have sufficient supplies,” says the doctor. Concepcion, who is also the founder of Go Negosyo, believes that two and a half months, or until June, would be ample time to take the boosters.
Filipinos, according to Concepcion, have yet to recognize the need of getting the booster shot.
Experts advise fully vaccinated Filipinos to get the following injection, as the original doses’ efficacy begins to decline four to six months after the initial shots are completed.
“At this time, there is no threat.” The danger is in the following semester, when the waning immunity may already be apparent. “And that’s not even taking into account the likelihood of additional varieties appearing,” he added.
Concepcion went on to say that, given their increased mobility, especially during election season, Filipinos require extra protection to avoid severe and life-threatening Covid-19 infections.
He added another rise in cases might be a “double whammy,” because the effects of the Ukraine-Russia war and rising commodity prices are projected to last into the second half of the year.
He went on to say that speeding up vaccine administration will reduce the number of vaccines wasted.
According to government data, the country has 27 million Covid-19 vaccines on hand, according to Concepcion.
“Our vaccines will not survive till the end of the year, therefore Filipinos must do their part and get their boosters,” he stated.
