Comms drills are conducted by the PH Army Signal Regiment.
MANILA, Philippines โ Last March 30, the Philippine Army’s Army Signal Regiment (ASR) staged a communications and electronics exercise (COMMELEX) and disaster response operations (DRO) challenge to improve its humanitarian aid and disaster response (HADR).
The exercises placed at the PA headquarters at Fort Bonifacio, according to Army spokesperson Col. Xerxes Trinidad.
“Simultaneous capability demonstrations and radio communication exercises emphasized the COMMELEX, which aims to improve interoperability between ASR and partner government and business sector entities in providing ICT support to HADR operations,” he continued.
According to Trinidad, the DRO challenge, which included the ASR Territorial signal battalions, centered on capabilities demonstration and radio communication exercises that included HADR, electronic warfare, and cyber-attack scenarios.
In the aftermath of Typhoon Odette’s devastation, the ASR installed very small aperture terminals (VSAT) to aid national government-led disaster response efforts in December 2021.
ASR signal battalions such as the 3rd Signal Battalion, 4th Signal Battalion, and 8th Signal Battalion, according to Trinidad, established critical communication equipment and devices that allowed the afflicted population to call for help and communicate information about the situation on the ground.
“The exercises, which are part of a series of activities to commemorate ASR’s 11th founding anniversary on April 12, 2022,” he explained, “are in line with Army Commanding General Lt. Gen. Romeo S. Brawner Jr.’s thrust to improve individual soldier skills and unit capabilities to bolster mission accomplishment.”
