MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Health (DOH) promised the public on Saturday that any expired coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) vaccines would be appropriately disposed of and destroyed, ensuring that no unscrupulous individuals would sell them to the general public.

They’ll put it in a ziplock bag, write a report, collect the vials, and have it incinerated by a third-party provider) “In a Laging Handa briefing on Saturday, Health Undersecretary Myrna Cabotaje said.

The guarantee came as she revealed that a lot of vaccinations supplied to Manila in November and December 2021, as well as January this year, would expire soon due to their short shelf life.

Apart from the same-month deliveries of vaccines procured by the private sector and local government entities last year, Cabotaje revealed that the vaccination rate had fallen in the first months of 2022, resulting in a lot of leftover doses.

She, on the other hand, is unable to provide a precise number of these doses or their expiration dates.

To reduce wastage, Cabotaje said the DOH plans to make all vaccines available in its “bakuna centers” across the country, so that vaccinees can receive a dosage even if they walk in.

Cabotaje went on to say that the Philippines is donating some of its unused vaccinations to partner countries, a proposal that is still being worked out between the Department of Foreign Affairs and the potential beneficiaries.
