MANILA, Philippines — Senator Grace Poe said on Monday that the government cannot tell PUV drivers and operators that they must wait until after the elections to receive government monetary assistance.

In a statement, she stated, “Hunger simply cannot wait.”

Poe was referring to the Land Franchising and Regulatory Board’s (LTFRB) cash subsidy program for 377,000 PUV drivers and operators who were affected by the subsequent oil price spikes.

She said that barely half of the listed beneficiaries received the help, which was distributed only ten days before the election ban went into force on March 25, causing the LTFRB to halt the distribution.

From May 25, 2022 to May 8, 2022, no public official or employee, including barangay officials and those of government-owned and controlled corporations (GOCCs) and their subsidiaries, shall release, disburse, or expend any public monies, according to Section 2 of Comelec Resolution No. 10747.

Poe urged the Comelec to make a decision on the LTFRB’s request for an exemption to allow the distribution to proceed as soon as possible.

“Our PUV drivers and operators have been waiting a long time for the cash aid that we have budgeted for in the annual budget to help our workers in times of need,” she said.

Last month, the Department of Budget and Management handed over PHP2.5 billion to the Department of Transportation, LTFRB’s parent agency, for the distribution of PHP6,500 cash subsidies to qualified PUV drivers of jeepneys, minibuses, UV express, taxis, motorcycle taxis, tricycles, and delivery services across the country.
