WASHINGTON, D.C. — The Academy of Motion Pictures Arts & Sciences stated on Friday that Will Smith has been barred from attending the next ten Oscars after slapping comedian Chris Rock onstage during the 94th Academy Awards.

After the Academy’s Board of Governors met to deliberate its response, the decision to prohibit Smith was made.

Smith is also restricted from attending any Academy functions during that time, in addition to being barred from a decade’s worth of Oscars.

In an open letter to Academy members, Academy president David Rubin and chief executive officer Dawn Hudson condemned Smith’s “inappropriate and detrimental behavior” during the March 27 (US time) event.

When Smith later accepted the Academy Award for best actor, Rubin and Hudson admitted that the Academy “did not sufficiently handle the situation in the room” during the event.

The Academy’s officials admitted that they had “fallen short” and were “unprepared for the unprecedented” in their response.

“We want to convey our heartfelt gratitude to Mr. Rock for remaining composed in the face of adversity,” they wrote. “Today’s decision in reaction to Will Smith’s actions is a step toward a wider aim of ensuring the safety of our performers and guests while also restoring trust in the Academy.”

Smith resigned from the Academy last week after receiving harsh criticism for his attack on Rock.

“Keep my wife’s name out of your (expletive) mouth,” Smith repeatedly yelled at Rock after the March 27 slap.
