In Zamboanga City, a dengue outbreak has been proclaimed.

ZAMBOANGA CITY, Philippines โ€” After the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council (CDRRMC) approved a resolution declaring a dengue outbreak here in an emergency meeting Friday, the city government here has ordered the formation of a task force and the preparation of a contingency plan.

According to a report provided by the City Health Office, Mayor Maria Isabelle Climaco-Salazar, who leads the CDRRMC, the city has been above the dengue threshold for four weeks in a row (CHO).

From January 1 to April 2, the CHO recorded 893 cases, with 11 deaths.

The first casualty was a seven-year-old kid from Barangay Bolong in late January.

“The task team will concentrate on addressing dengue fever cases in various parts of the city,” Salazar stated.

According to Dr. Ivy Iturralde, the chief of the City Epidemiology and Surveillance Unit, 85 dengue cases were documented in morbidity week 13, up 963 percent over the same week in 2021, when an epidemic was also proclaimed.

The results are also 257 percent more than the five-year average of 24 instances over the same time period (2017-2021).

The city’s dengue incidence rate per 100,000 people is 99.64, while Boalan, Divisoria, Mercedes, Pasobolong, and Culianan have the highest incidence rate per 10,000 people.

Cases have also been reported to be on the rise in Zambowood, Sta. Barbara, Putik, Sta. Maria, and San Roque.

The city government urged residents to participate in the 4-S campaign, which includes searching for and destroying mosquito breeding sites, implementing self-protection measures such as wearing long pants and long-sleeved shirts and using mosquito repellent on a daily basis, seeking early consultation, and supporting fogging/spraying in hotspot areas where an increase in cases has been observed for two weeks.

Dengue fever is a viral infection spread to people by infected mosquitoes known as Aedes aegypti, which bite between two hours after sunrise and two hours before dusk.

Fever with any of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, rashes, aches, and pains, such as eye pain or commonly behind the eyes, muscle, joints, or bones are the most prevalent symptoms.
