MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Roa Duterte said he is not willing to abandon the need of wearing face masks until his term ends while urging Filipinos to continue following minimal public health regulations.

“I’m just stating my case; there’s no way that mask isn’t going to be needed.” It will continue to be part of the process until my last day at work. “That’s my instruction, and you should follow it,” Duterte said in a prerecorded Talk to the People broadcast Monday night.

Duterte stressed the importance of continuing to wear face masks, as well as hand cleaning and maintaining a strict physical distance.

“We’re not out of the woods yet; we’re still in a pickle,” he explained.

Despite a decrease in the number of new coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) cases and hospitalizations in the Philippines, Duterte emphasized the importance of getting vaccinated “to protect the body” for the unvaccinated.

Duterte noted the need of wearing face masks because it decreases the risk of illness spread during election-related and religious festivities that draw large crowds.

“We’ve had a lot of crowds lately – religious and political (and you can see people are very close to one another),” Duterte added, adding that health officials have warned about the potential for these physical mass gatherings to have a negative impact.

According to Health Undersecretary Maria Rosario Vergeire’s report to Duterte, other countries saw a Covid-19 increase once the mandatory use of face masks was lifted.
