Honasan and other diligent government employees are needed in the United States: PRRD

MANILA, Philippines — President Rodrigo Duterte stated that the country needs “quiet” yet diligent people like reelectionist senator and former Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) secretary Gringo Honasan II back in the Senate.

On Monday night, during the third episode of state-run PTV-4’s President’s Chatroom, Duterte made this comment while interviewing Honasan.

“Kasi kailangan ka ng bayan, iyong mga tao na tahimik kagaya mo (The country needs you, people like) you don’t brag about your accomplishments, not even a single word about… We don’t publicize what we’re supposed to perform and get paid for because ako at ikaw nagkakaintindihan tayo niyan (You and I understand each other),” he told Honasan.

When asked to judge his success as previous head of the DICT, Honasan responded he would let the numbers speak for themselves.

“When we took over, sir, internet speed natin (our internet speed) was 7 megabits per second when your tenure began. Sir, Ngayon (Now) is 70 years old. Tapos (And then), sir, connectivity improved by 800 percent, which is exceptional. It is not, however, to my credit. “You set the goal for us, and we now have a professional core in one of the newest divisions,” Honasan explained.

The re-electionist senator underlined the importance of “upgrading” government’s grasp of ICT, stating that it should be used as a “driving force for progress.”

“My concentration, sir, would be on future planning — development planning purposes for our children.” We’re getting ready for the next generation. “That’s as far forward as we can go,” he explained.

Honasan stated that he will use digital technologies to boost the country’s agriculture performance and output.

“So, basically, sir, what we want to accomplish is iyong legislative agenda ko, samahan ko na ng technology (I’ll include technology in my legislative agenda),” he explained.

He added that technology will enable better queueing methods, which would save time and money.

In response, Duterte praised Honasan’s ideas as well as the DICT’s “tremendous progress” during his time as its head.

“The people have a right to know what you’re going to do,” the president continued, “because para sa kin (for me), you’ll be reelected, and para malaman naman ng tao (so that people know), I’m truly behind you to the hilt.”

Honasan, a retired soldier who was a significant figure in the 1986 People Power Revolution, is running for Senate alongside presidential candidate Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and vice presidential candidate Sara Z. Duterte of Davao City.

As an independent candidate, he is standing for the Senate.

Honasnan stated he chose to stay independent because the country’s political parties were just “temporary.”

“These are only transient alliances.” As a result, I believe one attempt should be made to strengthen the political party structure in order to make “yung plataporma at programa” (platforms and programs) more clear,” he stated.
