The Palace is hoping that the Comelec’s infighting would not compromise the integrity of the elections in 22.
MANILA – Malacanang expressed optimism on Wednesday that the alleged conflict among top officials of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) will not jeopardize the integrity of the national and local elections on May 9, 2022.
This comes after Comelec Commissioner Socorro Inting resigned from the poll body’s gun ban committee on Tuesday.
Inting’s departure was a “protest” against an amendment that gives Comelec chairperson Saidamen Pangarungan the right to grant gun prohibition exemptions and regulate election areas of concern.
In a press statement, acting presidential spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said, “We accept the independence of the Commission on Elections as a constitutional authority.”
Andanar expressed the hope that the Comelec concerns will be resolved “amicably and professionally.”
“We also think that any internal conflict among its commissioners will be settled politely and professionally, and that the integrity of the May 2022 elections will not be jeopardized,” he added.
The apparent dispute among Comelec officials occurred just over a month before this year’s elections.
Comelec Resolution 10777 recalibrating the norms and regulations on the election gun ban was approved by Pangarungan, along with Comelec Commissioners George Garcia, Rey Bulay, and Aimee Neri.
Comelec Commissioners Marlon Casquejo and Aimee Ferolino, as well as Inting, voted against the resolution.
Top government personnel is exempt from the gun ban under the Comelec resolution.
President Rodrigo Roa Duterte has consistently stated that the elections on May 9, 2022, will be “clean, fair, and honest.”
