MADRID, SPAIN — On Wednesday, the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) stated that Russia has indicated its decision to leave the organization.

“Russia has stated its decision to resign from the UNWTO,” the UNWTO said in a tweet, adding that Russia must “follow due process – and this will take a year to complete once official notifications through the right channels are received.”

On Wednesday and Thursday, the United Nations World Tourism Organization’s (UNWTO) General Assembly will meet in Madrid, Spain’s capital. Its goal is to determine if Russia should be sanctioned owing to the war with Ukraine and other concerns. For the suspension of Russia to be effective, it will require the support of two-thirds of the organization’s 160 members. If the suspension is allowed, it will go into effect right away.

The meeting’s provisional agenda includes, among other things, a “discussion of the suspension of the Russian Federation’s membership in accordance with Article 34 of the Statutes.”
