BAGUIO CITY, PHILIPPINES — On Wednesday, Chief Justice Alexander Gesmundo said the high court intends to use social media to extend its base of public interaction, while podcasts offer a reliable alternative to second-hand sources of court judgments and developments.

He mentioned social media behemoths Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram as places where the Supreme Court (SC) plans to be active.

However, Gesmundo, who is here for the court’s first summer session since the pandemic began, expressed qualms about creating an account on TikTok, a prominent video-sharing site with a billion active users.

“Parang mahirap yung Tiktok kasi iba yun, saka iba yung lumalabas na message sa TikTok di ba?” “Minsan is largely satire (I don’t know, TikTok seems difficult because most of what it generates is parody),” Gemundo said, adding that it could be a way for the judiciary to address disinformation.

“We’ll do some research on TikTok as a form of communication.” We’ll seek advice from professionals, and we’re now engaging with specialists on effective communication,” he said.

The SC website will also be “redesigned and feature material that is reliable and factual, understandable by a layman,” according to Gesmundo.

He went on to say, “That is basically the basis of our invention in terms of presenting the general people with information that affects the judiciary.”
