The rise in mobile phone purchases is unrelated to vote-buying.
MANILA โ The spike in mobile phone sales in Surigao del Sur, according to the Commission on Elections (Comelec), cannot be ascribed to vote-buying.
Reports that popular mobile phone brands were sold out in three shopping malls in the towns of Tagbina, Barobo, and Lianga should not be linked to poll-related irregularities, according to Acting Comelec spokesperson John Rex Laudiangco.
“The rise of the purchases in and of itself does not inherently signify abnormalities or crimes,” he stated in a press conference, “coming not from the Comelec but from siguro (maybe) a lawyer’s point of view.”
Escalating purchases is not even close to becoming a crime.
“It’s not a crime, in fact.” If there is a prohibition on escalating purchases, it should be a felony, but it isn’t,” he continued.
Nonetheless, he informed the public that the Comelec and the National Telecommunications Commission (NTC) are working together to investigate the event.
“Hihinihintay namin ‘yung feedback nila (NTC)โฆ.
We’re only waiting for their feedback at the momentโฆ
They always provide comments to us). And in situations like this, I believe they would be the first to provide input to us if they notice an unusual,” he said.
The Philippine National Police (PNP) cybercrime division has yet to record any incidences of vote-buying in Surigao del Sur, according to Laudiangco.
Despite multiple attempts to get into the Comelec website, Laudiangco claimed it is “not a cause for fear,” but rather something that should be anticipated in the upcoming elections.
Before and during the May 9 elections, the Department of Information and Communications Technology prevented almost 20,000 cyberattack attempts.
