Time to put politics aside and work together for agricultural development: DA chief
MANILA โ Following the recent national elections, the Department of Agriculture (DA) called on the public to put politics aside and emphasize economic progress through agriculture on Monday.
Before the approaching triumph of putative president Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. and presumptive vice president Sara Duterte-Carpio, DA Secretary William Dar urged Filipinos to embrace the next administration regardless of their political affiliations in a speech.
“Let’s be together to aid our new presidentโฆ We all know that the BBM-Sara combination triumphed, therefore we’re all aware of it “he stated.
Dar urged the Philippines’ next president to place a greater emphasis on agriculture, noting that agriculture accounts for only 1.7 percent of the country’s annual budget, much less than that of its ASEAN neighbors, which ranges from 4 to 6 percent.
“After the elections, we should use the agricultural sector (we should use the agricultural sector) to bring unity of purpose for us to transform this underinvested, under-budgeted, and terribly neglected part of the economy,” he stated.
During the official unveiling of the new National Agriculture and Fisheries Modernization and Industrialization Plan, the DA chief made the comment (NAFMIP).
Dar mentioned that nearly 31 million voters have voiced support for Marcos and Duterte-Carpio, which he termed “people capital.”
He believes that this support, as well as a holistic unity between the government and the private sector, can help increase agricultural stability, particularly in an administration with political will, which he expects from a Marcos administration.
“We need to unleash that potential with political will, with the statement that agriculture is one of the government’s top priorities, and that Philippine agriculture must be provided major budgetary resources now and in the future,” he said.
Dar informed the next generation of leaders that they would be supplied with a strategic plan and initiatives, known as NAFMIP, to ensure continuity and long-term development for the Philippines’ farmers and fishermen.
“Whoever is the leader of agriculture, he will not start from zero; you have a document, it is a living document, that you can further strengthenโฆ that you can seriously consider,” he stated.
The NAFMIP is a comprehensive strategic plan that includes short, medium, and long-term activities aimed at ensuring food security, nutrition security, income production, resilience, and sustainability, among other things.
