Six thousand Dumaguete students attend face-to-face classes in ten public schools.

CITY OF DUMAGUETE – According to a Department of Education (DepEd) official in this capital city, about 6,000 students are presently enrolled in limited face-to-face classes in ten public institutions.

In a press conference with Education Secretary Leonor Briones on Monday afternoon, Dr. Gregorio Cyrus Elejorde, superintendent of the DepEd-Dumaguete division of schools, said that 10 of the 25 schools identified for the progressive growth of face-to-face classrooms are now participating.

There are two secondary schools and eight primary schools, with a total student population of roughly 20% of the entire population of public schools in this Negros Oriental capital.

“We expect its (face-to-face classes) progressive increase in the next days, and we expect to create some type of ripple effect,” Elejorde said.

In the midst of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) epidemic, the DepEd city superintendent hopes that this will also be an “inducement” to persuade parents and the public to recognize that “coming back to school is actually a safe activity.”

Elejorde emphasized that DepEd-Dumaguete is very particular about following the Department of Health’s basic health regulations (DOH).

He stated, “We are looking forward to parents and other stakeholders continuing to support” the reinstatement of in-person programs.

The city division is now using three modalities: synchronous component with restricted face-to-face classes; online learning, especially during the asynchronous component; and modular program for individuals who prefer this type.

Meanwhile, at the same news conference, Briones expressed confidence that presumptive Vice President Sarah Duterte-Carpio will continue and strengthen Department of Education (DepEd) programs, with a particular focus on basic education.

Briones, who is from Negros Oriental and studied in the capital, expressed optimism that Duterte-Carpio, who was designated new Secretary of the Department of Education by presumptive President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr., will be open to proposals when she takes over the department.

She emphasized the importance of pupils learning fundamental education at a young age in light of global developments, emphasizing the importance of science, technology, and engineering in order to be competitive in the global economy.

“The challenge we are facing, as I am sure you are aware, is that we must educate our students not only for face-to-face life when they enter colleges or begin working, but also for technology,” she said.

Briones also emphasized the need for kids to learn mathematics and English grammar in elementary school because “given the status of English in the country,” it would be too late for them to master these in college.

“A lot has been done,” she remarked, “but there is still more to be done as change occurs.”

The Department of Education secretary stated that the administration is currently preparing for her departure in July.

A series of transition meetings will be held, and the incoming administration will be in charge of deciding what extra policies to pursue, she said.

Briones went to Negros Oriental to give shoes, t-shirts, school supplies, medicines, and face masks from a variety of public and private groups and contributors, focusing on last-mile schools with students from low-income neighborhoods.
