Before the Supreme Court, the Comelec is ready to respond to Marcos’ petition.
MANILA โ The Commission on Elections (Comelec) is prepared to obey Supreme Court (SC) rulings in the case of a petition to prevent Congress, acting as the National Board of Canvassers (NBOC), from counting presidential frontrunner Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s votes in the May 9 elections.
In a press conference on Tuesday, Acting Comelec Spokesman John Rex Laudiangco remarked, “The Comelec would always comply by any notice and ruling of the highest court of the land.”
“We shall await the Supreme Court’s verdict on the subject,” he continued.
The poll official is responding to a petition submitted by Fr. Christian Buenafe, among others, asking the Commission to reconsider its decision to dismiss the former senator’s disqualification case.
Comelec Commissioner George Garcia, for one, stated that the petitioners have the right to seek relief by referring the issue to the High Tribunal.
“They have every right to seek remedy in the High Court of what they consider is a valid justiciable matter,” he said.
Garcia had previously inhibited in all matters involving Marcos before the Comelec.
The petitioners asked the Supreme Court on Tuesday to seek a temporary restraining order (TRO) against Congress, acting as the NBOC, to prevent it from canvassing votes for Marcos.
They also urged the Supreme Court to overturn and set aside the Comelec en banc’s decision dismissing the disqualification cases brought against the presidential candidate who is ahead in the unofficial presidential vote count.
