MANILA – Former President and Pampanga Rep. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo personally expressed her support for House Majority Leader and Leyte Rep. Martin Romualdez as Speaker of the incoming 19th Congress on Wednesday.

Arroyo and Romualdez met in a restaurant in San Juan City, according to Lakas–Christian Muslim Democrats (Lakas-CMD), to discuss the issues Congress and the country will face in the coming years.

Romualdez expressed gratitude to the former president for her “words of support and encouragement” as he prepares to lead the House of Representatives.

“I appreciate it, ma’am. It means a lot to me coming from our President Emeritus in Lakas-CMD,” Romualdez, who is also the president of Lakas-CMD, added.

Arroyo’s statement came after incumbent Speaker Lord Allan Velasco made a similar statement.

“I am confident that his victory as Speaker of the 19th Congress will ensure that the incoming administration’s legislative program is pursued and finished. My friendship and support for Majority Leader Romualdez “During a meeting in Makati City, Velasco said.

President Rodrigo Duterte’s PDP-Laban, projected Vice President Sara Duterte’s Hugpong ng Pagbabago, Nacionalista Party, and the Party-list Coalition Foundation Inc. have all endorsed Romualdez.

In the new House, his supporters now make up an overwhelming majority.

“I will be returning to the House on June 30, 2022,” Arroyo was cited in the media as saying. As a result, I would like to inform members of the Lakas-CMD that I am endorsing Majority Leader Martin Romualdez for House Speaker in the upcoming Congress. I strongly encourage all members of our party to follow suit.”

Arroyo previously served as Speaker of the 17th Congress.
