MANILA, Philippines — On Thursday, the Metro Rail Transit Line 3 (MRT-3) carried 353,553 passengers, the largest single-day ridership the MRT-3 has had since resuming operations in June 2020, at the height of the pandemic.

In the midst of the Covid-19 outbreak, there were an estimated 250,000 to 300,000 daily travelers.

MRT-3 officer-in-charge General Manager Michael Capati said in a statement on Friday that the MRT-3 is ready to serve even more passengers during the third month of its Libreng Sakay (free ride) campaign.

According to him, the free ride promotion and increased ridership aided the MRT-3 in testing the rail service’s maximum passenger capacity.

The MRT-3 has an average of 14 to 16 three-car trains and four four-car trains running along its mainline at any given time.

He also mentioned that the current free ride promotion is the longest one that has been done in the MRT-3.

From March 28 — the start of the free ride campaign — through Tuesday, May 24, the MRT-3 has delivered 15,730,872 free trips.

The free-riding program, was supposed to terminate on May 30 but was extended to June 30, the last day of the Duterte government.
