Shortbows have historically been employed for hunting by numerous American tribes and African Bushmen.

Recurve bows: The only bows permitted at the Olympics are recurve bows. Due to their lightweight, these bows are popular with many Olympic athletes. It functions using the same principle as traditional longbows. The limb ends’ forward curve helps to smooth out the pull.

Compound Bows: For many archers, a compound bow reduces the amount of force needed. Compound bows draw more slowly and require less effort to hold at full draw, allowing the user to concentrate more on the target. This bow has a large energy capacity as well. To increase user leverage, compound designs incorporate elliptical or cam wheels on the ends of the limbs.

One kind of bow that deviates from the typical bow design is crossbow. In this configuration, the limbs are mounted horizontally. The firing principle is the same whether the limbs are compound or recurve. The user manually pulls the string, either by hand or with a windlass, before locking it in place.

Mechanical techniques are used to keep the string in a locked position. The loaded arrow can then be fired by releasing the energy that has been stored in the creature’s limbs using a trigger mechanism.
