1,200 cases of monkeypox are reported in New York City.

On Monday, New York City Mayor Eric Adams declared a state of emergency as the monkeypox outbreak spread throughout the biggest US city.

According to a statement from Adams, “New York City currently has over 1,200 reported cases, or roughly 25% of cases countrywide, and we are continuing to see the numbers climb.”

In NYC, where there have been over 5,000 documented cases of monkeypox in the US, up to 150,000 people may be at risk for infection, according to city health officials.

Adams continued, “This order will support our ongoing efforts to inform, immunize, test, and treat as many New Yorkers as we can and assure a full-scale government response to this outbreak.

Over the weekend, Governor Kathy Hochul of New York issued an executive order designating the monkeypox outbreak as a disaster for the whole state.

Although Adams is given the authority to “suspend local laws and impose ordinances, if required, to ensure the well-being and health of all New Yorkers” as well as “to protect public health and slow the spread,” New York City’s emergency executive order does not enable this.

Monkeypox was deemed a worldwide health emergency by the World Health Organization on July 23.

More than 20,000 instances of the virus have been documented since May in over 80 different countries.

The US Department of Health and Human Services reported late last week that 60,000 to 80,000 monkeypox tests can be performed in the US each week and that more than 1.1 million doses of the Jynneos monkeypox vaccine have been sent to states that are most in need.

According to health officials, skin-to-skin contact, sharing linens, towels, and clothing are other ways that monkeypox is passed from person to person. It is primarily transmitted through male-to-male sexual contact.

The virus can cause chills, headaches, and muscle discomfort in addition to a rash, malaise, fever, and swollen lymph nodes.

The Jynneos vaccine, which will be available for distribution in 2023, has already been purchased by the federal government in quantities of an additional 5.5 million doses.

The US has access to an additional 11.1 million doses of the monkeypox vaccine in case it is required to stop the outbreak.
