Building powered by solar panels hopes to stimulate the use of renewable energy.

The construction of a 50 kW on-grid solar energy system at this church-based credit cooperative’s office may mark the beginning of the province of Bulacan’s transition to renewable energy for cost savings and a cleaner community.

Reynato S. Puno, chairman of GenWATT Energy Solutions and a former chief justice, made the announcement at the opening of the St. Martin of Tours Credit and Development Cooperative (SMTCDC) building on Saturday. GenWATT Energy Solutions put the solar energy system on the structure.

On a typical sunny day, the system, which has a 50-kW inverter and 40-kW solar panels installed on the building’s roof, could produce 180 kW to 200 kW of electricity, meeting 60 percent to 80 percent of the building’s needs during business hours, according to GenWATT Chief Executive Officer Wendell R. Tamayo.

At a cost of PHP11 per kilowatt hour, it might result in monthly electricity bill savings of PHP45,000 to PHP70,000. It is expected to produce 1,500 megawatts of electricity over the solar panels’ 25-year guaranteed production efficiency, according to Tamayo.

Danilo D. Esteban, chairperson of the SMTCDC, a credit union cooperative, concurred and noted that the solar energy system might result in significant savings for their organization.

Puno predicted that the solar energy system would reduce exorbitant electricity costs.

He underlined the desire for further cooperatives and regional governments to begin utilizing renewable energy.

Puno stated in his keynote address that he hoped the move by St. Martin of Tours Credit and Development Cooperative would spur other cooperatives in Bulacan and other local government units to switch to using renewable and sustainable energy sources.

A Filipino business focused on solar energy solutions is called GenWatt Energy Solutions. It specializes in designing, installing, commissioning, and providing post-sale services for residential and micro, small, and medium-sized business solar energy systems.
