A Senate committee will examine the revitalization of ROTC

When the Senate committee on basic education, the arts, and culture meets for its organizational meeting on Friday, one of the main agenda topics will be a request to resurrect the compulsory Reserve Officer Training Corps (ROTC) program.

The idea of reinstating mandatory ROTC is one of the hot subjects that will be discussed during the meeting, according to Senator Win Gatchalian, head of the committee, who stated this on Thursday.

According to Gatchalian, there is a good possibility that the 19th Congress would approve the law requiring senior high school students to participate in ROTC.

According to him, President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. listed the ROTC program as one of his top legislative priorities in his first State of the Nation Address (SONA) last month.

He continued by saying that Vice President Sara Z. Duterte also advocates for the program’s resuscitation.

According to Gatchalian, the ROTC issue in his Senate Bill No. 387 is significantly different from the previous one since it will be updated for the present day.

For students in Grades 11 and 12, Gatchalian’s bill calls for the institutionalization and management of the fundamental ROTC program.

According to him, the curriculum will incorporate fundamental military instruction to inspire, prepare, and use students for civil-military activities or national defense readiness. However, the bill stipulates that no student under the age of 18 may actively participate in hostilities.

Similar measures were also introduced by Senators Ronald “Bato” de la Rosa and Robinhood “Robin” Padilla.

According to de la Rosa’s Senate Bill 199, students who aspire to join the course as officers can enroll in an advanced ROTC during their first two years of college.

On the other hand, Padilla’s Senate Bill 236 encourages youngsters to be more prepared to respond to emergencies like natural disasters.

In order to restore the youth’s sense of pride, nationalism, and patriotism, he underlined the necessity to reinstate mandatory ROTC programs.
