Sara Z. Duterte, vice president and secretary of education, gave the Filipino youth advice on Monday to use the lessons of history to bring out the greatest heroes within them.

Duterte stated in her message that National Heroes Day should be used to foster the desire for the same level of patriotism as well as to remember the selfless sacrifices made by past heroes.

As we reflect, may we never waste the knowledge gained from the past and instead apply it to help every Filipino, especially the youth, discover their inner greatest hero.

The Vice President was supported by 16-year-old Cavite student Jasmin de la Providencia, a grade 10 public school student.

“Sa tingin ko po kasi ang mga kabataan ay mais open na sa mga nangyayari sa mundo, mas aware na at most of the young people po kasi ay may sympathy for others, ” the author writes. ‘I think the youth [nowadays] are more open to global events, they are more conscious, and most of the young people have compassion for others.’ Gumagawa nga rin sila ng program to aid others in need. She told the Philippine News Agency that they were “even doing programs to assist those in need.”

Dela Providencia claimed that as a tiny gesture demonstrating her love for the neighborhood, she has been volunteering to help set up their classroom for Brigada Eskwela’s in-person learning setting.

“For me, being a hero can be demonstrated by service and love for the country, whether huge or tiny support, as long as you’re not asking for anything in return,” she continued.

In celebration of the past heroes and the valued freedom and independence in the Philippines, Duterte also emphasized the need for unity.

She also acknowledged people battling for world peace and even terrorist organizations.

“The blood of our National Heroes is the same blood of bravery, selflessness, and love of country and fellowmen that continues to flow across the nation today — now permeating into the minds and hearts of many Filipinos who have dedicated themselves to the cause of rebuilding the nation from the rubble caused by disunity, hatred, misunderstanding, and acts of hostilities perpetrated by anti-people, anti-government, and local terror groups that hostage the progress of the country f

To retain the spirit of patriotism and ensure an undivided country, she stated it is crucial to continue to be motivated by the deeds of the nation’s national heroes.

As we pledge to defend the integrity of our independence and the interests of our country against those who want us to fail, to collapse, and to break as a nation, she continued, “let us today celebrate our National Heroes with a promise that their sacrifices will serve as our light and inspiration.
