Jimenez, a former Comelec spokesperson, will retire this month.

James Jimenez, who has been the Commission on Elections’ (Comelec) spokesperson for 15 years, will retire on September 16.

In a statement released on Saturday, Comelec Chair George Garcia said the decision to allow the director of the Education and Information Department (EID) to retire had been accepted.

According to Garcia’s statement, “during its regular meeting on August 31, 2022, the commission en banc granted Director James Arthur B. Jimenez’s request for retirement, which he filed with the Comelec Personnel Department on August 2, 2022.

Garcia thanked Jimenez for his assistance since 2004, including as the head of the EID.

Even in an acting role, the poll body will soon begin the selection process for Jimenez’s replacement.

Garcia expressed their sadness at Jimenez’s retirement in an interview given on Saturday during the plebiscite in Calaca, Batangas, but they respected his decision and wished him well.

“This is highly personal to him, and we respect Director James Jimenez’s privacy. And maybe the public will help us understand why our Director James Jimenez decided to take early retirement, he said.

However, it is undoubtedly a positive development for him because, as you well know, each stage of life presents us with a fresh opportunity to grow as people. So, all we can do is wish Director James Jimenez well,” Garcia continued.

The investigation into the cancellation of the final presidential and vice presidential debate episodes before the May 2022 general and municipal elections, which led to Jimenez’s replacement as spokesperson, will continue, according to Garcia.

“That’s something we didn’t take into account when we accepted his retirement because, as you know, processing his documents is what’s most crucial. There is no stopping the investigation, or what is known as fact-finding, but it cannot stop someone from planning to retire, he added.

On May 6, Jimenez was temporarily replaced as spokeswoman by Law Department Director John Rex Laudiangco.
