Sufficiency of the local sardine supply in PH: DA-BFAR

Consumers were given the reassurance that there is enough supply of sardines in the nation on Wednesday by the Department of Agriculture’s Bureau of Fisheries and Aquatic Resources (DA-BFAR).

Despite projecting an annual production of 293,431 MT, the DA-BFAR claimed in a statement that the supply is “totally locally-produced.”

208,387 metric tons (MT) and 85,043 MT share, respectively, of the volume, which is totally sourced locally, came from commercial and municipal fishers, according to the statement.

The aforementioned prediction is anticipated to meet the 101,367 MT national demand for sardines.

The Philippine Statistics Authority guaranteed its sufficiency, as did the DA-BFAR.

The statement continued that the sufficiency level for sardines or tamban is estimated to be 222.58% for the first quarter of 2022 and 409.06% for the second quarter.

The agency stated that the National Sardine Management Plan’s execution has contributed to stabilizing the local supply.

The DA stated that “a considerable improvement in production and supply was achieved since its adoption in 2020.”
