No intention to outlaw K-dramas: Estrada

Senator Jinggoy Estrada clarified that his earlier statement, made out of exasperation over the status of the Philippine entertainment sector, was not a proposal to outlaw Korean and other foreign-produced films in the nation on Wednesday.

Estrada acknowledged that outlawing foreign-produced television programs occasionally crossed his mind during Tuesday’s Film Development Council of the Philippines (FDCP) hearing. He cited the lack of patron support for the local film industry as the reason for this.

In a statement, he said of the country’s Koreanovelas: “While we are only too glad and willing to praise South Korea’s entertainment sector, we have regretfully allowed our own to decline because of the lack of support from the movie-going public.”

“I hope our kababayans’ zealousness for supporting international artists could be reproduced for our domestic artists, who I firmly believe are also of the highest caliber. The incredible achievement of South Korea is a result of their passion for their nation. For our entertainment sector, which is at best barely surviving, it is high time we take their lead and do the same.

Meanwhile, Senator Robinhood Padilla declared that he was considering increasing the import taxes on movies to encourage the local film sector to create more Filipino motion pictures and television shows.

Padilla also backed the FDCP’s request for increased funding for preserving vintage Philippine movies and constructing its headquarters.
