Continue the crackdown on child sex abuse online: Solon
On Sunday, Senator Win Gatchalian encouraged the government to continue its campaign against child sexual exploitation and abuse online in the midst of the worldwide celebration of World Children’s Day (OSAEC).
“Bahagi ng pagtataguyod natin sa kaligtasan at kapakanan ng mga kabataan ang pagtiyak sa kaligtasan ng internet, lalo na’t ginagamit ito para sa iba’t ibang uri ng karahasan at pang-aabuso,” Gatchalian
Gatchalian claimed that the government is now better prepared to fight OSAEC as well as other types of child trafficking and abuse in light of the recent enactment of two pertinent laws.
He was alluding to the Anti-Sexual Abuse or Exploitation of Children (OSAEC) and Anti-Child Sexual Abuse or Exploitation Materials (CSAEM) Acts, as well as the Expanded Anti-Trafficking in Persons Act of 2022 (Republic Act No. 11862). (Republic Act No. 11930).
In the past year, 20% of internet-using children aged 12 to 17 were victims of serious cases of online sexual exploitation and abuse, according to the report “Disrupting Harm in the Philippines: Evidence on child sexual exploitation and abuse.”
Up to 2 million children were exposed to these dangers last year, according to the study’s analysis of data from 950 youngsters.
The report claims that the experiences of victims include being threatened with money or gifts to engage in sexual activity or being blackmailed into doing so.
Gatchalian recounted how children’s exposure to OSAEC grew as a result of the Covid-19 epidemic.
More than 2.8 million reports of child sexual exploitation online (OSEC) were filed in 2021, according to the Department of Justice (DOJ), more than twice as many as were filed in 2020 (almost 1.3 million reports).
Additionally, according to the DOJ, it opened formal investigations into 268 OSEC cases in 2018, about four times as many as the 73 cases it handled in 2020.
