Followers were instructed not to kiss the Black Nazarene.
The coronavirus illness 2019 (Covid-19) is still a threat, therefore event planners for the Feast of the Black Nazarene on Friday encouraged believers to follow health precautions.
In a press conference, Quiapo Church adviser Alex Irasga reminded the public that kissing the picture of the Black Nazarene is forbidden during the “pagpupugay” (viewing or touching), which begins on Saturday, at the Quirino Grandstand in Manila.
Kissing the image is not permitted, however visitors are welcome to touch it or wipe it with a towel or handkerchief.
The Black Nazarene picture will be guarded throughout the occasion, according to the church official, so that no one will kiss it.
From January 7 at 1 a.m. through January 9, the feast day, “pagpupugay” will take place.
Three lanes will separate men, women, those with impairments, older citizens, and expectant mothers.
The worshippers will physically distance themselves from the Black Nazarene figure and wash their hands both before and after touching it, he said.
On the stage in the middle of the Quirino Grandstand is a life-size representation.
According to Irasga, the “pagpupugay” will have an entrance at South Drive (on the left while approaching the venue), and an exit at Katigbak Drive.
To respond to crises, the location has first aid teams and medical stations.
6K police to protect the feast
Nearly 6,000 police officers will be deployed, according to the National Capital Region Police Office (NCRPO), to protect the yearly religious gathering.
A total of 5,559 police officers will be stationed at Quiapo Church, Quirino Grandstand, and law enforcement checkpoints, according to a statement from NCRPO chief Maj. Gen. Jonnel Estomo. In addition, 175 members of the Bureau of Fire and Protection (BFP)-NCR and Joint Task Force (JTF)-NCR will be stationed there as support units.
According to Estomo, no merchants are permitted near the Quiapo Church, and attendees are not permitted to bring backpacks or colored containers. Water bottles and only clear plastic bags would be permitted.
From Friday at noon until noon on January 10, all of the ports and waterways between Quirino Grandstand and Quiapo Church will also be secured, and the airspace in the area will be designated as a “no fly zone.”
On Friday at 10 p.m., a traffic rerouting plan will also be in effect; it can be viewed on the Manila Public Information Office’s official Facebook page.
Estomo stated that from January 5 to January 10 at 12:01 a.m., all permits to carry guns outside of residence (PTCFOR) are suspended in Manila.
Guns may only be carried by members of the PNP, Armed Forces of the Philippines, and other law enforcement agencies while they are on official business.
From January 7 to January 9, the authorities of Manila City will likewise impose a booze ban.
Along with the “pagpupugay,” Eucharistic ceremonies will take place in the Grandstand on January 8 and 9, at midnight, and will be presided over by Manila Archbishop Cardinal Jose Advincula and Quiapo Church Rector Fr. Rufino Sescon, respectively.
