PNP wants to classify e-Sabong as an unlawful gambling act.
E-sabong, or online cockfighting, has been recommended for inclusion on the list of unlawful gambling operations punishable by Presidential Decree 1602, the nation’s anti-illegal gambling law, according to the Philippine National Police (PNP), which made the announcement on Monday.
The Anti-Cybercrime Group has advocated the action in cooperation with Congress, according to PNP commander Gen. Rodolfo Azurin Jr., who also proposed fines against service providers that won’t block e-sabong websites.
It should be noted that since e-sabong websites hosted outside of the Philippines can continue to function thanks to virtual private networks, they can only be blocked, not taken down. The technological factor makes it difficult for the PNP to control e-sabong. It’s a technological conflict. As a result of some e-sabong participants’ significant financial resources, he said, “I believe the government should also start bolstering or enhancing its cyber capability.
The e-sabong threat is being addressed by government organizations connected to information and communications technology, according to Azurin.
In reality, the NTC (National Telecommunications Commission) and DICT (Department of Information and Communications Technology) have been quite accessible and helpful. They are supporting our efforts to track down e-sabong operators, he said.
In December of last year, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. signed Executive Order (EO) 9, which continued the suspension of live streaming or broadcasting of cockfights outside of cockpits, cockfighting venues, or locations where cockfights are being held.
In addition, the rule prohibits betting on live cockfighting events that are streamed or aired, whether they take place on-site, remotely, or off-cockpit.
The suspension shall not apply to traditional cockfights that are conducted in accordance with legislation that have been approved or issued licenses.
The Philippine Amusement and Gaming Corporation was tasked by EO 9 with coordinating the order’s implementation with local government units, other relevant government agencies, and private businesses.
According to Azurin, 28 persons were detained in accordance with EO 9 in Mandaluyong City, Lapu-Lapu City in Cebu, and Santiago City, Isabela.
According to him, 102 e-sabong-related platforms have been blocked or taken down, 76 more have been deleted or deactivated, and 39 e-sabong websites and a Facebook page have been made inoperable.
“Requests to shut down five live websites that still host e-sabong games have been presented to the DICT and NTC. In addition to 146 websites, 67 Facebook accounts, 31 Facebook groups, 18 Facebook pages, and 10 mobile applications utilized in e-sabong activities, the PNP is closely monitoring 272 platforms, he added.
Rodrigo Duterte, the country’s former president, halted e-sabong activities in May of last year after at least 34 fans of the game vanished in the nation and are still unaccounted for.
Major e-sabong operators stopped operating. However, a few solitary bettors and small groups continue to use the internet-based platform.
At least 15 individuals have been charged in relation to the missing e-sabong enthusiasts by the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group so far.
