Zubiri: As the economy grows, wages should rise.

The Across-the-Board Wage Increase Act of 2023, which proposes to raise wages in the private sector across all regions by PHP150, was submitted on Tuesday by Senate President Juan Miguel Zubiri. The bill calls for the cascading of the nation’s economic prosperity to the people.

According to Zubiri, the gap between the rich and the poor would widen further if the fall in inflation to 8.6 percent in February is not translated into an increase in income.

What we want is to improve everyone’s lot, increase the size of the middle class, and make sure that every Filipino has the resources necessary to live a genuinely decent life. It entails giving individuals the tools they need to thrive, not just get by, but also reach a degree of comfort that enables them to pursue interests and goals outside of their jobs, according to the Senate President.

No matter the capitalization or workforce size, the planned wage increase will be applicable to the whole private sector, including both agricultural and non-agricultural businesses.

The Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao now has the lowest daily nominal wage rate at PHP316 (non-agriculture), while the National Capital Region has the highest at PHP570 (non-agriculture).

The Regional Wages and Productivity Boards set the minimum wages for the private sector, but Zubiri pointed out that they are only allowed to issue one pay order annually unless there are special circumstances.

According to Zubiri, employees ought to live respectable lives given the time and effort they have put into their careers.

There is a problem, he argued, if workers are working long hours, every day, and still struggling to pay their rent, utilities, and basic necessities.

Zubiri recently declared that the one-time inflationary support for all 3,000 Senate employees would increase from PHP12,200 to PHP50,000.

They also received more expensive medical care, from PHP30,000 to PHP50,000.

The Senate’s savings were used to pay the bonuses.
