John Mark Tokong, a professional surfer from Siargao Island in the Surigao del Norte province, is the first Filipino to qualify for the 2023 World Surf League Challenger Series. (2023 WSL CS).

The United Philippine Surfing Association (UPSA) announced on Monday that Tokong, also known as “Marama,” will face off in the 2023 WSL CS against the best international surfers.

The first and second events of the 2023 WSL CS will take place in Sydney from May 17 to 24 and in Gold Coast, Queensland, Australia, from May 1 to 13.

The World Surf League Championship Tour, which is comprised of the best surfers in the world, will be joined by those who compete in this top-tier league, according to the UPSA.

This year’s WSL championship tour is scheduled for June.

At the 2023 White Buffalo Hyuga Pro tournament, a WSL Qualifying Series 3000 competition held in Okuragahama Beach in Japan from March 2 to 5, this year’s winner Tokong emerged victorious.

He has 5,890 points from six events and 20 heats, good for No. 4 in the WSL Asia Regional Ranking. His highest heat score was 12.95.
