According to the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE-9) for the Zamboanga Peninsula, the region’s employment rate for the last four months of this year has been 97.4%.

According to Albert Gutib, director of DOLE-9, the labor force survey conducted as of last month shows that the current employment rate is 95 percent, up 2.4% from the same time last year.

Over 1.6 million people were employed individually between January and April of this year, which is more than the 1.4 million recorded during the same time in 2022.

“The main contributing factor to the increase in employment rate is the reopening of the economy of private businesses due to the easing of (pandemic restrictions,” Gutib added.

He added that the government’s provision of emergency job and livelihood assistance through DOLE was another contributing element.

Similarly, he said that the local government units’ implementation of infrastructure projects had also contributed to the rise in the employment rate.

He pointed out that the jobless rate dropped from 5.0 percent or 77,610 in 2022 to 2.6 percent or 44,159 this year.

However, he claimed that over the last four months, the underemployment rate has risen to 19.8% from 18.7% over the same period last year.

A situation where people are compelled to labor in low-paying or low-skill jobs is referred to as underemployment.

In the meantime, Gutib claimed that given the fact that the current wage order has not yet reached the end of its one-year validity, the likelihood of a new wage order for the Zamboanga Peninsula may be distant at this time of the year.

According to the rules, a wage order cannot be modified or revised within a year, according to Gutib.

The current pay order was authorized on June 25, 2022, and it was put into effect in two stages. The most recent or second of which went into effect in December 2022,” he stated.
