Senator Risa Hontiveros asserted on Tuesday that a legitimate cover for a cryptocurrency scam and a human trafficking enterprise was provided by a licensed Philippine Offshore Gaming Operator (POGO).

The scammer, Colorful and Leap Group, is a sublessee of CGC Technologies, Inc., a POGO business with a PAGCOR license based in Clark, Pampanga.

On May 4, law enforcement officers raided the same business, which led to the arrest of at least 12 people reportedly overseeing the operations.

Over 1,000 victims of human trafficking, including those from Indonesia, Vietnam, China, Myanmar, Thailand, and Bhutan, are still being repatriated.

During the Senate Committee on Women’s investigation into human trafficking and a cyber fraud operation in Clark, the Inter-Agency Council Against Trafficking acknowledged the scam operations and that scam hubs hide beneath a legal cover.

It is shocking that this bogus cryptocurrency company, which has brought in hundreds of foreigners to work as con artists through human trafficking, has been using a legitimate POGO. In a news release, Hontiveros stated that “POGO used their license, or they allowed it to be used to deceive innocent people.”

Hontiveros argued that PAGCOR, which oversees POGOs, should actively investigate the businesses they permit to operate in the nation.

Otherwise, it is effectively escalating this troubling and rising humanitarian issue in our area, according to Hontiveros.

She urged the POGO ban once more.

“The crypto scam and human trafficking operations will also grow at a frightening rate our government will never be able to overtake,” she said. “If POGOs are allowed to continue operating as usual.”

Senator Sherwin Gatchalian has previously called for “the adoption of a resolution urging the executive department to immediately ban all POGO operations in the country with the end given upholding the safety of the Filipino people, and to sustain the path to growth and development consistent with the administration’s economic reforms.”

According to Gatchalian, A new organization should handle only regulatory tasks, such as authorizing and regulating games of chance and other kinds of gambling, who also requested that Congress draft legislation to separate the functions of regulation and operation under the charter of PAGCOR.
