The Department of Health has discovered 618 new Omicron cases.
The Department of Health (DOH) revealed Thursday that 618 new instances of the Omicron form of the coronavirus were discovered among the 677 samples in the most recent batch of whole-genome sequencing.
The DOH reported the Omicron instances included 497 local cases and 121 returning abroad Filipinos in a joint statement with the University of the Philippines – Philippine Genome Center (UP-PGC) and the University of the Philippines – National Institutes of Health (UP-NIH) (ROFs).
The addresses of the cases in the Omicron variant were in the National Capital Region (238 cases), Calabarzon (71 cases), Ilocos Region (30 cases), Western Visayas (30 cases), Eastern Visayas (28 cases), Central Luzon (27 cases), Central Visayas (20 cases), Cagayan Valley (19 cases), Cordillera Administrative Region (13 cases), Davao Region (ten cases), Soccsksargen (six cases), Bicol Region (two cases),
13 cases are still active, two patients have died, and 560 cases have been labeled as recovered, according to the DOH. The outcomes of 43 instances are still being confirmed.
There have been 1,153 verified Omicron variant cases to date.
There were five deaths among the confirmed Omicron cases.
The original Omicron lineage, B.1.1.529, as well as its sub-lineages, BA.1 and BA.2, have all been found in the country, according to the DOH. “The BA.2 sub-lineage was first discovered on December 31, 2021, and was found to be the majority of Omicron cases in the most recent batch.”
There were 35 cases of the highly transmissible Delta variation discovered, with 26 being local cases and nine being ROFs, for a total of 8,647 patients.
While investigations on the possible impacts of the detected ‘Stealth Omicron’ on current case trends are still underway, the DOH recommended the public to follow protective health practices and adhere to basic public health standards.
“New processes were put in place as a precautionary measure to limit the hazards of the various virus types,” it stated.
It also urged the public, particularly those who are most vulnerable to the virus, such as the elderly, the young, and the sick, to finish their primary series of immunizations and boosters.
