Pangasinan distributes P7 million in payment to displaced OFWs.

The Pangasinan province government has granted approximately PHP7 million in financial aid to overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) who have been deported or relocated as a result of the coronavirus disease 2019 (Covid-19) pandemic.

According to Provincial Employment Services Office chief Alex Ferrer, the Tulong Pangkabuhayan program has helped over 1,300 OFWs in the province, and the figure is continually growing because it is a continuing initiative.

“This began in November 2020, when Governor Amado Espino III decided to assist Pangasinense OFWs in the face of the pandemic,” he said in an interview on Thursday.

Aside from the one-time cash support of PHP5,000, Ferrer stated that OFWs attended a financial management training.

“To assist them in better managing their funds and establishing a livelihood once they have been repatriated,” he added.

The majority of the OFW recipients, according to Ferrer, were from the Middle East.

The beneficiaries were chosen in collaboration with the migrant desk officers of the local government units (LGUs) and OFW family associations in the province’s various locales, he said.

“We investigate why they were repatriated, how long they had been working as OFWs before being repatriated, and their financial situation.” “Of course, we prefer individuals who began working as OFWs only a few years ago,” he stated.

Returning OFWs were given monitoring forms by the LGUs, and those who consistently submitted the forms were given priority, according to Ferrer.

Amado Aquino, the town administrator of Bugallon, congratulated the province government on behalf of the OFW recipients in his town in a statement.

“While the sum may appear little, it could already be enough to start a small business that would help them meet their daily needs,” he explained.

The financial aid is part of the provincial government’s main recovery initiative, Abig (heal) Pangasinan, which aims to help displaced OFWs start their own livelihood or small business.
