In comparison to Covid-19, 95 percent of tourism workers in the dive industry have been vaccinated.
About 95.78 percent of tourist workers in licensed dive facilities across the Philippines have received coronavirus vaccinations, indicating that this specialty market is ready for the country’s reopening to foreign visitors.
According to the latest data from 105 Dive Establishments (DEs) and Liveaboard Dive Establishments (LDEs) accredited by the Department of Tourism’s Philippine Commission on Sports Scuba Diving, 1,342 employees (or 95.78 percent) have been inoculated (first dose and fully vaccinated) against Covid-19, while 59 employees (4.21 percent) are still waiting for their shots.
Bernadette Romulo-Puyat, the country’s tourism secretary, praised the development, adding that the immunization of dive professionals will improve the country’s overall readiness to welcome foreign visitors and help it maintain its position as one of the world’s top diving destinations.
“The DOT will continue to collaborate with other national and local government organizations, as well as private sector players, to ensure that all tourism employees in the country get vaccinated as soon as possible. It is critical to protect our personnel against the virus now that our borders are being opened to foreign tourists “Puyat explained.
“We anticipate a good number of international tourists returning to our diving destinations in the coming months, after our recent win as Asia’s premier dive destination at the 28th World Travel Awards (WTA) last October,” she added.
Since 2019, the Philippines has held the WTA title of Asia’s Leading Dive Destination for the third year in a row.
Unvaccinated tourism workers at dive sites, according to the survey, are either pregnant, have comorbidities, or are still unwilling to get vaccinated, according to the tourism head.
Some tourism employees are still unvaccinated as a result of missed vaccine appointments and a preference for vaccine brands that aren’t available in their area, according to her.
Puyat reaffirmed the department’s appeal for local government entities in tourism areas, particularly dive places, to cooperate together to prioritize tourism workers in vaccination programs.
