MANILA, Philippines — Vice President Leni Robredo pledged on Wednesday to preserve the rights and well-being of indigenous peoples (IPs), adding that if she is elected President, the government will not abandon them.

During a visit to an Ati village on the island of Boracay, Robredo expressed her desire for IPs to be able to remain in communities without fear of being evicted to make room for development initiatives or projects.

Robredo promised that under her administration, the national government will provide IPs with a dignified existence.

“Ang akin lang din na assurance sa inyo na pagtayo po binigyan ng pagkakataon, gaano man kaunti kayo, gaano man kalayo kayo, sisiguraduhin po natin na ‘yung ating gobyerno ay inaalagaan kayo,” she said.

She also emphasized the importance of preserving IPs’ cultural history, saying that the world-famous Boracay Island is being developed for tourism purposes.

“‘Yung kultura niyo mas mahalaga pa sa kahit anong negosyo, na ‘yung inyong kultura,’yung pangangalaga dito ay bahagi ng ating pagiging Pilipino (Your culture is more significant than any sort of business, na ‘yung inyong kultura,’yung pangangalaga dito ay bahagi “It’s part of our Filipino identity to preserve your culture,” she explained.
