Duterte’s decision on the proposed four-day workweek is scheduled for March 21.
MANILA, Philippines โ President Rodrigo Roa Duterte is expected to announce his decision on the proposal to institute a four-day workweek on March 21, Malacanang said Thursday.
“We will find out on Monday,” acting Presidential Spokesperson and Communications Secretary Martin Andanar said in an interview with radio DZBB.
Socioeconomic Planning Secretary Karl Kendrick Chua proposed a four-day workweek scheme on Tuesday to conserve energy and reduce work-related expenses in light of recent fuel price increases.
Chua stated during a meeting convened by Duterte at Malacanang Palace on Tuesday night that his proposal was made in 1990 during the Gulf War and again in 2008 during a period of high fuel prices.
Alfonso Cusi, the Energy Secretary, endorsed Chua’s proposal for a shorter workweek and the expansion of work-from-home arrangements.
According to Andanar, Duterte is still considering Chua’s recommendation.
“It is a recommendation, a suggestion to mitigate its possible negative effect,” he stated.
For the month of March, Metro Manila and several other parts of the country have been placed on the most relaxed Alert Level 1.
Alert Level 1 permits all government and private sector employees to return to their jobs in order to stimulate economic activity.
Duterte decided on Tuesday to maintain the collection of excise taxes on petroleum products, despite the continuous increase in fuel prices.
Duterte made the decision after Finance Secretary Carlos Dominguez III warned that suspending fuel excise taxes would result in a PHP105.9 billion reduction in total government revenue in 2022.
Rather than that, he approved Dominguez’s proposal to distribute PHP200 monthly subsidies to approximately 12 million impoverished Filipinos for a one-year period.
