BARMM commemorates International Day of Forests through tree planting activities.
CITY OF COTABATO โ To contribute to the region’s forest cover improvement, employees of the Ministry of Environment, Natural Resources, and Energy – Bangsamoro Autonomous Region in Muslim Mindanao (MENRE-BARMM) conducted concurrent tree planting activities.
“This is to commemorate the International Day of Forests,” newly appointed MENRE Minister Akmad Brahim said in a statement Wednesday.
Brahim led MENRE officials and employees in a simultaneous tree planting in Sitio Lomboy, Barangay Awang, Datu Odin Sinsuat on Tuesday afternoon, planting over 550 seedlings of mahogany species.
Additionally, 200 seedlings were planted in Barangay Udalo in Piagapo, Lanao del Sur; 250 Yakal seedlings were planted in Sitio Pilar, Barangay Yakal in Lantawan, Basilan; and 50 mangrove propagules were planted in Barangay Pahut in Bongao, Tawi-Tawi.
On March 17, during Brahim’s visit to the province, a tree planting activity was held in Sulu.
“By protecting our forests, as one of the MENRE’s mandates, we also contribute to the conservation of wildlife habitats, biodiversity, and forest resources for communities and families whose livelihoods and sources of income are reliant on the forest,” Brahim explained.
Badr Salendab, MENRE’s director-general, who also participated in the tree planting, emphasized the importance of continuing tree planting.
“This commemoration (International Day of Forests -) serves as a reminder to the public about the critical role of reforestation in combating climate change,” she explained. “Conserving and protecting the environment is a shared responsibility that everyone bears, not only for their own well-being but also for the well-being of future generations.”
The International Day of Forests, which is observed annually on March 21, aims to raise awareness about the value of forests to people and their role in poverty eradication, environmental sustainability, and food security.
The theme for this year is “Forests and environmentally sustainable production and consumption.”
BARMM retains approximately 300,000 hectares of forest cover, according to MENRE-BARMM data.
