Siquijor’s Negros Oriental has begun IT training in preparation for the elections.
DUMAGUETE CITY — This week, over 600 information and technology (IT) specialists from Negros Oriental will be trained on how to handle and troubleshoot vote-counting machines (VCMs), which will be utilized in the national and municipal elections on May 9.
On Sunday, lawyer Lionel Marco Castillano, the provincial election supervisor-designate of the Commission on Elections (Comelec) in Negros Oriental, informed the media that some of the trainees have already begun arriving for the in-house training, which begins on Monday.
“These are IT technicians who will be dispatched to the polling locations on election day to assist the teachers if an issue with the VCMs develops,” Castillano explained, speaking in a mix of English and Cebuano.
He said the IT technician training will run five days, with one batch of roughly 150 trainees every day at a local hotel in the capital city.
Castillano’s equivalent in Siquijor province, lawyer Eliseo Labaria, will accompany him to the Comelec-led training, with the Department of Science and Technology managing the accreditation examinations.
