During Holy Week, the Immigration Bureau is on high alert for an influx of passengers.

MANILA, Philippines โ€” The Bureau of Immigration (BI) is on high alert, expecting at least 13,000 travelers per day this month, with even more expected between Palm and Easter Sundays.

All airports and seaports are properly manned, according to BI Commissioner Jaime Morente.

“Historically, the number of passengers increases during Holy Week and other extended breaks,” he stated in a Saturday statement. “We expect the numbers to climb again this year when the country reopens its borders.”

Since a week ago, according to BI statistics, passenger arrivals at airports have averaged between 13,000 and 15,000 per day, up from 6,000 to 9,000 last month.

The country began allowing fully vaccinated leisure tourists in February, with 202,700 arrivals as of April 7 according to the Department of Tourism.

“We’ve made sure that our workers are on high alert to guarantee that passengers are processed smoothly and efficiently,” Morente added.

Lawyer Carlos Capulong, the head of the Port Operations Division, said BI’s computerized gates are completely working during the busiest season.

The process will allow arrivals to be processed digitally in as little as eight seconds for each passenger.

After the Mass on April 10, Roman Catholics will wave palm fronds or young coconut leaves weaved into “palaspas” to commemorate Jesus Christ’s entry into Jerusalem.

Official holidays run from Holy Thursday to Black Saturday (April 14 to 16).
