On the precinct finder woes, a Comelec executive asks for patience.
DUMAGUETE CITY โ On Monday, a Commission on Elections (Comelec) official pleaded with voters to be patient with the poll body’s newly launched online precinct finder for registered voters, which had some difficulties for some users.
Commissioner George Erwin Garcia made the appeal during a signing of a peace pact here ahead of the Central Visayas Regional Joint Security Control Center’s final meeting (RJSCC).
“The precinct finder was just launched last Friday, but owing to the large number of people who used it right away, some issues were discovered, but it is now operational,” Garcia stated in a combination of English and Filipino.
While utilizing the Comelec website’s precinct finder, many registered voters here continue to report their status as “deactivated” or unable to access the precinct finder.
When using the online precinct locator, users get “error” or “under maintenance” alerts.
When a young male voter wanted not to be identified, he discovered he was registered in two places after using the precinct locator. He promptly fixed it at the local Comelec office, he said.
Many people are unaware that their deactivation status is based on their inability to vote in two consecutive elections, such as the 2018 and 2019 elections, according to Garcia.
“There is a Supreme Court judgment that the 2018 barangay election is a regular election for the purposes of assessing whether a voter is deactivated or not for the two subsequent elections,” he stated.
If a registered voter is unable to access the online precinct locator, Garcia said the Comelec will distribute a voter’s information sheet (VIS) to the 67.4 million registered voters.
According to him, the Comelec directed that these VISs be distributed by barangay officials rather than local chief executives.
According to Garcia, the VIS comprises a voter’s personal information, and assigned polling precinct, voting dos and don’ts, and a list of national and local candidates.
Meanwhile, Msgr. Julius Perpetuo S. Heruela, lead convenor of the Diocese of Dumaguete’s Diocesan Electoral Board (DEB), said that voter assistance desks will be set up during Sunday masses at various parishes to assist people in locating their polling precincts if they are unable to use the online precinct finder.
Garcia also stated that the Comelec will provide hard copies of the official list of registered voters in the province to the DEB, which has been recognized as an umbrella organization for citizen’s arm groups such as the Parish Pastoral Council for Responsible Voting and the National Movement for Free Elections.
