WFH environments foster greater workplace competition senator

On Tuesday, Senator Grace Poe requested the support of her colleagues for Senate Resolution (SRN) 125, which calls for a review of Republic Act No. 11165, also known as the Telecommuting Act, in order to encourage work from home (WFH) and hybrid arrangements.

During the height of the Covid-19 outbreak, when employers were compelled to institute new working practices, Poe shared her observation in her privilege speech.

“Some call for a specific number of days per week. Others limit the number of days an employee can work each year remotely. Some businesses still assign cubicles where workers are required to report on a regular basis. Only coordination and collaboration take place in other offices, “She spoke.

The Committee on Public Services’ chair, Poe, emphasized that these working arrangements all revolve around flexibility.

“Employees are given a fair amount of latitude to arrange their time and space as they see fit, subject to any contractual restrictions. Hybrid work is not a novel, future concept that has not yet seen the light of day. Once more, an old friend is knocking on our door, “She spoke.

Poe noted that in 2018, the nation’s fixed broadband speed was 17.32 megabits per second, trailing only Vietnam, Malaysia, and Thailand.

“We had the second-to-last mobile download speed in Asean. Work from home does still not plug and play in our economy due to these restrictions, “explained Poe.

She claimed that hybrid employment is a huge boon to the health and wallets of commuters in the Philippines.

“The average Mega Manila resident spent a total of 188 hours in traffic in the last year,” she said. “This number is likely higher when the rainy season turns our roadways into floodways.”

She stated that ignoring the cost of food and cellphone data, a random employee could spend up to PHP56,000 on travel costs.

“The person who worked from home, however, made daily savings of four hours. That amounts to a total of 20 hours, or nearly a full day, over the course of a five-day workweek, “She spoke.

According to Poe, a recent study revealed that a Filipino worker who used a hybrid work setting during the epidemic saved almost PHP340,000.

According to studies, the WFH system was beneficial for people’s bodily (74.2%), emotional (35.7%), and mental (27.8%) health.

According to her, six out of ten Filipino respondents want to keep some type of hybrid job that will boost their output and well-being, cut costs, and increase their competitiveness.
