The promise of good housing for Filipinos is praised by DHSUD.
The National Shelter Month (NSM) was observed this year by the Department of Human Settlements and Urban Development, with a focus on President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr.’s “Pambansang Pabahay para sa Filipino: Zero ISF 2028” campaign (DHSUD).
DHSUD Secretary Jose Rizalino Acuzar stated, “The NSM contains a variety of events and programs targeted at further providing Filipinos with better awareness of their financial options in owning safe and inexpensive homes.” Acuzar was speaking at the NSM kick-off on Monday.
According to Acuzar, the DHSUD’s goal of providing inexpensive and quality shelters to improve the lives of Filipinos, particularly informal settler families and those in the low-income range, is reiterated by this year’s theme, “Abot-Kayang Pabahay Tungo sa Panatag na Buhay.”
The DHSUD hopes to construct six million housing units throughout the present administration, or one million units annually, through the initiative.
“This year’s event perfectly captures the DHSUD’s objective to offer excellent, affordable housing that will last over the long term and give Filipino families a sense of stability. Ideally, this objective will be accomplished before the present administration ends, according to Acuzar.
In September, groundbreaking ceremonies were held in several cities and municipalities across the nation, including Quezon City, Bacolod City, Roxas City, Iloilo City, and Mariveles, Bataan.
Upcoming groundbreaking and agreement signing events will take place in time for the NSM celebration.
To inform the DHSUD and the public about the financial components and potential of the Pambansang Pabahay para sa Pilipino Program, several initiatives will be launched by the DHSUD central and regional offices, as well as its key shelter agencies (KSAs), including caravans, forums, and learning sessions.
Acuzar noted that leisure events like Zumba classes, workplace Olympics, and tree-planting campaigns would also be planned.
In the meantime, Undersecretary Henry Yap thanked partner organizations in his speech for aiding the DHSUD in carrying out its mission, especially the United Nations Human Settlement Program or UN-Habitat, whose “assistance in numerous Philippine projects, such as the development of climate resilience urban plans and design studies, provincial climate risk diagnostics, and in rebuilding Marawi, reinforces their shared commitments toward establishing safe, resilient communities.
In addition, he commended UN-Habitat for “jointly celebrating with us World Habitat Day and continuously creating awareness on the growing inequalities and challenges facing our settlements that the ‘3 Cs Crisis further exacerbates,’ namely, Covid-19, climate change, and conflicts” in addition to participating in the kick-off event.
The DHSUD’s objective to actualize the Filipino family’s dream of having a secure and good home to enhance their quality of life was supported by Bernard Barth, human settlements officer of the UN-regional Habitat’s office for Asia and the Pacific.
The NSM falls during Urban October, a month-long festival sponsored by UN-Habitat to educate the public and foster dialogue on the opportunities and difficulties brought on by the rapid speed of urban change.
