PBBM seeks closer strategic ties between the Philippines and Japan
On Thursday, President Ferdinand R. Marcos Jr. reiterated his desire to increase cooperation between the Philippines and Japan in a number of areas of shared interest.
When Mori Masafumi, the Special Advisor to the Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida, paid him a courtesy visit at the Malacanang Palace, Marcos made the vow.
According to a press release from Undersecretary Cheloy Garafil, officer-in-charge of the Office of the Press Secretary (OPS), Marcos spoke about his plans to strengthen bilateral cooperation on infrastructure development, agriculture and food security, maritime security, and climate change mitigation.
Garafil continued, “The President also desired a strategic alliance with Japan in the West Philippine Sea.”
“Marcos stated he wants to engage with the Japanese government on infrastructure development, agriculture, food security, the West Philippines Sea, marine security, and climate change,” she said.
Marcos stated that Japan “is and will remain a stable and staunch partner of the Philippines” during his meeting with Masafumi.
According to Marcos, who was quoted by the OPS, “I look forward to working closely with Prime Minister Kishida in developing an even stronger strategic alliance with your country.”
Masafumi’s support for Marcos and his government was mirrored by Kishida in response.
In pursuit of a stronger strategic alliance, he also reaffirmed Kishida’s unwavering commitment to maintaining bilateral platforms and high-level interactions between the two countries.
Masafumi stated that his nation is eager to keep working with the Philippine government in a number of areas, particularly in infrastructure development.
Masafumi also sent Marcos another offer from Japan to pay a state visit there.
To take part in the 13th High-Level Joint Committee Meeting on Infrastructure Development and Economic Cooperation, Masafumi took a plane to the Philippines.
Marcos commended Japan for cooperating with the Philippines in pursuing infrastructure development projects before his meeting with Masafumi.
The implementation of four stations from the Metro Manila Subway-Contract Packages 102 and 103 received financial support from the Japan International Cooperation Agency, which Marcos also praised.
On October 21, the Philippines and Japan had their 9th Military-to-Military meeting in Manila, where they reviewed strategies for enhancing their defense cooperation.
On September 7, the Philippines and Japan convened a second vice-ministerial strategic dialogue in Manila, where they witnessed new collaborations on space and energy security.
