Since cases of the feared African swine fever (ASF) have been reported in the nearby province of Iloilo, two quarantine stations have been established in Victorias City, in northern Negros Occidental.

The City Veterinary Office stated in a statement on Monday that the Victorias City ASF Task Force is manning the quarantine stations, which are located in the coastal communities of Barangays 6-A and 9.

In order to prevent live pigs, pork, and its byproducts from accessing any ports of entry in Victoria City, the stations act as checkpoints for all incoming fishing vessels, it was noted.

The Philippine Coast Guard Sub-Station Victorias, the Association of Barangay Captains, Bantay Dagat from the City Agriculture Office, and Provets from Victorias City are also members of the task force.

In order to stop and regulate the flow of live animals, pigs, pork products, and other relevant things into Negros Occidental, quarantine stations have also been erected in other ports of entry across the province, including its capital city.

When incoming shipments of live animals and pig products from the provinces of Iloilo, Capiz, Antique, Aklan, and Guimaras were required to undergo tight and thorough screening and inspection in October, Governor Eugenio Lacson gave the order to the Provincial ASF Task Force members.

Additionally, he gave the order to seize any unauthorized shipments of live animals and animal products into the province.

The governor also sent separate memos to all municipal chief executives in the province informing them of the ban and directing them to see that the “ASF Prevention Ordinance of Negros Occidental” and other preventive and safety measures were followed.

Negros Occidental, which boasts a PHP6 billion hog sector, is a province without confirmed cases of ASF and forbids the importation of pigs, pork meat, and pork products from Luzon, Mindanao, and Eastern Visayas.
